WCC Basketball: San Francisco rise, Gonzaga drops in latest power rankings
4. Gonzaga Bulldogs - 11-5 (2-1)
It’s a shocking development for the Bulldogs to this point, still not having a good win this season on its resume. They had a shot at a road win at Santa Clara, but lost in the end, 77-76. Not only did that snap a 26-game win streak to the Broncos but they’re not in first place of the WCC standings.
They do have two blowout wins over San Diego and Pepperdine, showing that they’re still good enough to win the league. They have to play both of them again but this time on the road. We’ll see if the Bulldogs can bounce back and avoid what would be a fatal loss to their postseason hopes.
3. Santa Clara Broncos - 12-7 (3-1)
The Broncos got their big breakthrough victory with the Bulldogs, thanks to a game-winning basket from Adama Bal. He had 17 points and six assists in the 77-76 win, while Brenton Knapper had 16 points. Unfortunately, Santa Clara may have celebrated the win too much, as they got blasted at home against Saint Mary’s two days later by 24 points.
Up next for the Broncos is Pacific on the road, a test to see if they can avoid any losses to the lower tier to keep up in the WCC standings. Portland and Pepperdine are up next at home.
