Initial Reaction
Though it’s somewhat of a moot point because the Mountaineers have almost an entirely new roster and coaching staff, the men’s basketball program will be visiting only 3 new schools in conference play this season. West Virginia will visit conference newcomers Colorado and Utah and head to Provo to take on BYU for the first time since they joined the conference for the 2023-24 season.
As for some obvious challenges, West Virginia’s away-only schedule has the makings of a difficult task. A road game at Phog Allen speaks for itself. A trip to Manhattan, Kansas is never easy, and the Baylor Bears have lofty expectations this season.
West Virginia won’t have to visit the state of Arizona this season as both Arizona and Arizona State will make the long trek to Morgantown. Another bright spot is that West Virginia will avoid a trip to Ames, Iowa this season. The Cyclones often create one of the most challenging environments for away teams to play in.
As for the teams that the Mountaineers face twice in the regular season, Houston sticks out above the rest as the Cougars have their sights set on another strong season. TCU, BYU, and Cincinnati each present challenges as they have the roster makeup of a team that can finish in the top half of the Big 12 standings.
