The SEC Tournament is here and fans from all around the southeastern United States will come together and watch their favorite teams battle it out for the conference title. Tennessee won the regular season title this season and now we wait to see who will take home the tournament title.

The first SEC Tournament was in 1933 and ran until 1953, except for one year, 1935, where no tournament was held. The Kentucky Wildcats dominated the tournament at that time. Then from 1953 to 1978, there was no conference tournament as the regular season champion was designated the official SEC champion.

When the SEC Tournament returned in 1979, it was held as a round-robin style tournament. Then in 1992, the SEC split into the Eastern and Western Divisions awarding division titles instead of a regular season title.

Also when the tournament returned in 1979, it was renewed that the winner of the SEC Tournament would get the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. However, the official SEC Champion was still the regular season champion that had the best record.

In the 2011-2012 season, the SEC did away with the divisions with the additions of Texas A&M and Missouri. Ever since, 1979, there has been an SEC Tournament until 2020, when the tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Kentucky Wildcats lead the way by a large margin in tournament wins with 32 championships. The next closest is Alabama with eight championships. However, Kentucky has been on a cold streak as of late, not winning a championship since 2018.

Here is a breakdown of every school that has won an SEC Championship. The only school on here that is no longer in the SEC is Georgia Tech, but they did have one SEC Tournament title.

There always seems to be talk on whether or not a conference tournament is beneficial. Some people think the tournament allows lesser teams to get into the tournament is they can run the table. Others believe it is a good way to gauge who is truly ready for March Madness.

I see both sides, but who doesn't love the chaos of a lower seed looking like they could run the table and get some solid upsets late? I mean that is what we love about March Madness right?
