3. Liam McNeeley (Connecticut)
UConn lost four of their five starters from last year’s squad that secured a second-consecutive national championship, meaning it was an important offseason for Dan Hurley and his staff. The Huskies don’t quite look as strong as last season (right now), but the addition of McNeely is one major reason they’re in solid shape in the Big East again. A 5-star forward from Texas, McNeely has become an instant star for the Huskies, though he’s missed recent games with that ankle sprain.
We haven’t seen McNeeley on the court since New Year’s Day, but this talented forward is averaging 13.6 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game. He gets the job done in a myriad of ways for the Huskies. He dropped double-doubles in his first two collegiate games and really showcased his talent with a 26-point, 8-rebound effort against Gonzaga a few weeks before Christmas. It’s pretty obvious why the Huskies are eager to get him back on the court in the coming weeks.
He’s made 38% of his 3-pointers and defends at a high level, all while being well-sized and an impact player in the frontcourt. UConn is surviving but certainly miss him and will need his services if they’re going to win the Big East. This team should head to the NCAA Tournament and any hopes for a three-peat partially lie on McNeeley’s shoulders. He’s had flashes of great brilliance; expect more of that for a program that knows how to win big games in March.
