The Players Era Festival has become the premier College Basketball non-conference tournament in November, entering its second year. Michigan won the first event in a unique 24-team format, but it’s smoother this time around, with two different brackets: an 8- and 16-team event.
Both fields include multiple likely preseason top-25 teams, and it’s a traditional bracket. For this specific 8-team field, it’ll run November 17-19th, with the winner earning multiple Quad 1 signature victories. We know the opening-round matchups, but which is the most compelling? Here’s a closer look and a ranking of each game.

1. West Virginia vs Auburn
Yes, both teams missed out on the NCAA Tournament a year ago. But expectations are higher for both sides entering 2026-27, thanks to both having quality backcourts. The Tigers bring back their top two guards from last season in Tahaad Pettiford (15.4 ppg and 3.8 apg) and Kevin Overton, who averaged 14.1 ppg on 41% shooting from deep.
Meanwhile, West Virginia landed Finley Bizjack, who led Butler with 17.1 ppg last season. He’s paired with Miles Sadler, a five-star incoming guard prospect and one of the highest-ranked commits in program history. Of the four games, this is easily the most competitive opening matchup on paper, with both teams having a real shot at winning.
2. Kansas vs UNLV
The court system could suddenly make this a highly intriguing game. Kansas has two starters (Melvin Council Jr. and Tre White) currently eligible to play, while former Ole Miss scorer (and former Jayhawk) AJ Storr committed to the Rebels, setting up an individual storyline for this matchup. But No. 1 incoming freshman prospect Tyran Stokes alone makes this a compelling game, even if Kansas will be a clear favorite.
3. Florida vs Notre Dame
The Gators have a great chance of being the preseason AP No. 1 team for the 2026-27 season, bringing back four starters from the SEC champions who won 30 games last season, including Preseason SEC Player of the Year, Thomas Haugh. Notre Dame lost multiple key pieces and had to rebuild its roster but does have Braeden Shrewsberry (11.9 ppg) back, along with Logan Duncomb, who put up 18.3 ppg and 8.9 rpg at Winthrop last season. We’ll see if the Irish can make this a competitive matchup come November.
4. Houston vs Rutgers
The Cougars have become one of the most consistent powerhouses in the country under Coach Kelvin Sampson. Their new-look roster looks to be just as strong, led by the transfer duo of Dedan Thomas Jr. (LSU) and Corey Hadnot, who averaged over 20 ppg at Purdue Fort Wayne last year. Rutgers is still rebuilding but the hope is that returning guard Tariq Francis (17 ppg) has a better supporting cast to have them more competitive in the Big Ten. But Houston will be a different test of its own.
