Ranking the whopping 14 teams in play for 5-star class of 2027 PG Cayden Daughtry

Throughout the Spring and Summer AAU Circuit games and events, several future college basketball prospects performed well for their respective stocks. But there was a clear overall winner in Cade Daughtry, a 6’0 point guard prospect out of Florida who won the notable Peach Jam Championship and MVP honors, averaging over 30 ppg.

Daughtry was already a top-20 prospect known for his scoring ability, but after those major individual outings, he showed why he is one of the top perimeter players in the 2027 class. Now a consensus five-star and top-10 overall prospect, Daughtry’s recruitment has reached an all-time high, with many teams in the mix.

In fact, 14 teams are officially after Daughtry. Here’s an early power ranking of where each team ranks in terms of their fit with the five-star guard.

1. Louisville Cardinals

Pat Kelsey’s short era at Louisville has already been successful, including sending former 5-star point guard prospect Mikel Brown Jr. to the top 10 in the recent NBA Draft. Oregon transfer Jackson Shelstad is set to be the team’s lead guard for the upcoming season but will be looking for his replacement. Based on Brown's success in this system a year ago, this could be the perfect destination for Daughtry. 

2. Iowa Hawkeyes

Coach Ben McCullom had one of the best point guards in the nation last year in Bennett Stirtz, who went from D-2 to an NBA Draft first-round pick. He also had one of the highest usage rates in college basketball, which could be another appealing point for someone like Daughtry. As long as McCollum isn’t a coaching carousel candidate next offseason, Iowa would make a lot of sense for this five-star prospect. 

3. Florida Gators

Florida is one of a few teams who’ll definitely be looking for a new guard, as 5th-year senior Denzel Aberdeen is the projected starter if eligible. Why the team has been frontcourt-heavy the last couple of years, all three key forwards and centers should be off to the NBA Draft a year from now, allowing someone like Daughtry to come in and be their lead offensive option in year 1.

4. Tennessee Volunteers

Coach Rick Barnes has a good history of guard development, including past five-star players. For the upcoming season, it’ll be transfer-heavy, including Cal transfer Dai Dai Ames and Jalen Haralson from Notre Dame. Daughtry’s role won’t be as clear since so many of the transfers have multiple years, which is the main concern with this option. 

5. Vanderbilt Commodores

Coach Mark Byington's success at both the team level and with All-SEC scoring guard Tyler Tanner has put them in a position to land a five-star talent. They already got top-20 prospect Gabe Nesmith to reclass to join them this upcoming season, and assuming Tanner goes to the NBA Draft a year from now, Daughtry can come in to be the next lead guard for the program. 

6. Arkansas Razorbacks

If you’re a 5-star guard prospect playing for Coach John Calipari, chances are good that you’ll be in the NBA. That was the case for Arkansas's last two guards from last season, Darius Acuff Jr. and Meleek Thomas. The expectation is that five-star freshman Jordan Smith will be gone after next season, while Georgia transfer Jeremiah Wilkinson could be a pro candidate too. Daughtry will have to watch who else Coach Cal adds in the 2027 class, and whether they prioritize him over the other top guards. 

7. Kentucky Wildcats

Daughtry’s scoring ability would be a natural fit with Coach Mark Pope and the Wildcats, who actually have one of the younger backcourts in the SEC. On paper, Daughtry would be an upgrade over incoming transfers Zoom Diallo and Alex Wilkins. But Kentucky is also after other top guard prospects such as Reese Alston and would likely take only one top-tier ball-handler in the 2027 class. 

8. Florida State Seminoles

As one of the three local options for Daughtry, the Seminoles are hoping to be an under-the-radar candidate. Coach Luke Loucks' system could appeal with his NBA ties, and they could sell him on plenty of playing time and being the focal point of the offense. The question here would be whether they can give him a good enough surrounding core to compel Daughtry to choose FSU over the juggernauts on the list. 

9. UConn Huskies

Top prospects have done very well in the Dan Hurley era at UConn, including sophomore Braylon Mullins being a way-too-early top-10 2027 NBA Draft pick. But even if he’s gone, there’s a potential logjam for Daughtry, as Solo Ball will be back and so can Silas Demary Jr. Then there’s the freshmen guard duo of Colben Landrew and Junior Country, two possible early draft picks but could also return. At least a couple of them would have to leave for this to be realistic. 

10. Villanova Wildcats

Coach Kevin Willard has shown a willingness to give freshmen the ball, with Acaden Lewis having a large role out of the gate. They have several veterans entering year 4, including Tyler Perkins, and multiple transfers. On paper, Daughtry would be better than all of them and could play next to Perkins. But will it be an appealing enough option to overcome the other teams involved? 

11. Michigan Wolverines

Had Dusty May not left for the Dallas Mavericks this offseason, Michigan would be near the top of this list. But Coach Mike Boynton, who isn’t even guaranteed a second year, is now at the helm. The Wolverines could lose Elliot Cadeau next offseason, and he does have Cade Cunningham’s lone year at OK State on his resume. But right now, it’s a hard sell without being assured he’s sticking around long-term. 

12. Miami Hurricanes

There’s a lot to like about Miami if you’re a local prospect. Coach Jai Lucas is a rising star; the roster is contending, and the system allowed Tre Donaldson to thrive last season. Landing Michigan transfer guard LJ Cason isn’t the fatal flaw, but potentially Acaden Lewis, a sophomore transfer guard from Villanova who likely isn’t an NBA Draft prospect just yet. If he’s not leaving, it’s hard to envision both of them in the backcourt together compared to other potential guard duos throughout the list. 

13. Providence Friars

Coach Bryan Hodgson is looking to be aggressive with his first full recruiting class. He even managed to land top-30 reclass prospect Javon Bardwell to join them this upcoming season. But the reality is that he’s going to have to prove he can win in the Big East before being a true threat for top-10 overall prospects. But a year from now, the Friars could be favorites for some of them if things go really well in 2026-27. 

14. USC Trojans

Coach Eric Musselman has past success with five-stars at Arkansas, including Anthony Black a few years ago. But while he does have multiple top-30 incoming frontcourt prospects, there are roadblocks in bringing in a guard. The main issue being that he could bring back all of his current guards for another year, including KJ Lewis and Rodney Rice. Plus, if the Trojans have another down year, Musselman could also find himself on a real hot seat.
