Robert Morris had played everyone in Horizon League play this season outside of IU Indy, who, compared to the last few years, have improved on the court. But you wouldn’t have been able to tell on Thursday night, as the Colonials jumped out to an early 33-8 lead in what ended up being a blowout from start to finish.
The final score was 106-53, easily the best offensive and defensive performances from the Colonials this year. It puts their record at 16-7 and 8-4 in league play, extending the current win streak to six. Here are some key takeaways from the game.
1. Three-point defense thrives
Coming into the game, the big concern with IU Indy was how potent they could be from the three-point line, making nearly 11 a game. They couldn’t make anything on Thursday night, going 3/22 from deep. Paul Zilinskas, who leads the team with over 16 ppg, had just eight points on 1/6 shooting from deep on the night. That wasn’t going to get it done for the Jaguars.
2. Collective offensive breakthrough
Meanwhile, Robert Morris got contributions from everyone. Seven players were in double figures, led by Amarion Dickerson with 18 points. DJ Smith made all four three-point shots early on and finished with 14 points, while both Alvaro Folguerias and Ismael Plet each produced double-doubles. And unlike IU Indy, the Colonials were great from the three-point line, making 12/22 on the night.
3. Solidifying spot in top tier of Horizon League
The most important thing for Robert Morris is that they’ve put itself into a position where they could potentially be a two-seed in the Horizon League Tournament. That would mean they would get a first-round bye and host the second-round matchup instead of being on the road.
The Colonials are in a three-way tie at 8-4 alongside Youngstown State and Purdue-Fort Wayne. Plus, the Milwaukee Panthers are 8-3 in second. Cleveland State (11-1) has become the team to beat at the top, but Robert Morris is right within range to get the most favorable position possible.
