Rutgers basketball coach Steve Pikiell has announced that he is battling cancer, sharing the deeply personal news in a letter to the university community Wednesday. Pikiell said he sought medical attention after he had not felt completely healthy for a period of time. Tests revealed the cancer diagnosis, though the longtime Scarlet Knights coach did not disclose the specific type.

The encouraging news is that Pikiell has already undergone a successful surgery. He and his doctors have also developed what he called a “kick-ass game plan” for the remainder of his treatment.
“I’m going to attack cancer the same way,” Pikiell wrote after referencing the fight and determination he regularly demands from his players.
Steve Pikiell Plans to Remain Involved With Rutgers
Pikiell intends to stay involved with the Scarlet Knights as much as his health and treatment schedule allow.
Associate head coach Brandin Knight will assume an increased leadership role whenever Pikiell is unable to be with the team. Pikiell expressed complete confidence in Knight, the rest of Rutgers’ coaching staff and the program’s players.
Rutgers athletic director Keli Zinn said there is no established timetable for Pikiell’s full-time return to the sideline.
“Those of us who know Steve, know the determination and strength he brings to everything he does,” Zinn said in a statement included with Pikiell’s letter. “I know he will bring that same spirit to every treatment and every day ahead.”
Pikiell thanked his doctors at RWJBarnabas Health and Memorial Sloan Kettering, along with his family, Rutgers administrators and the school’s supporters.
He concluded the message by expressing confidence that he would defeat the disease and eventually return to the job he loves.
Pikiell Transformed Rutgers Basketball
The 58-year-old Pikiell is entering his 11th season at Rutgers. He arrived in Piscataway in 2016 after spending 11 seasons as the head coach at Stony Brook.
Pikiell inherited one of the most difficult rebuilding projects in major college basketball and gradually turned Rutgers into a competitive Big Ten program. He led the Scarlet Knights to the 2021 NCAA Tournament, ending a 30-year drought, and guided them back to the tournament the following season.
Rutgers’ victory over Clemson in 2021 was its first NCAA Tournament win since 1983.
According to his official Rutgers biography, Pikiell has recorded 147 victories at the school, ranking third in program history. He also owns more ranked wins than any coach in Rutgers history and helped recruit Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey, the two highest NBA draft selections the program has produced.
Those accomplishments explain why Pikiell’s announcement will hit Rutgers fans especially hard. He did more than produce victories. He restored belief in a program that had spent years searching for stability and national relevance.
Basketball will continue while Pikiell receives treatment, but Rutgers’ most important fight will take place away from the court. This time, the entire Scarlet Knights community will be fighting alongside the coach who helped rebuild its program.
