Rutgers needed its first commitment in the 2027 recruiting class to establish momentum. RJ Moore delivered considerably more.
The four-star shooting guard committed to Rutgers during an official visit, choosing the Scarlet Knights over a group that included Alabama, Syracuse, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest and Virginia. Moore is ranked No. 60 nationally by 247Sports and No. 40 by Rivals. He becomes Rutgers’ highest-rated commitment since Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey.
That is the type of recruiting victory capable of changing how the rest of a class views a program.

Moore is listed at 6-foot-6 and 190 pounds. He averaged 18.6 points, eight rebounds and 2.5 assists during his junior season at Ambassador Christian School. His combination of size and perimeter shooting gives him the profile programs increasingly prioritize.
Big wings can remain on the floor in different matchups.
Moore should be capable of attacking smaller guards, spacing the floor and eventually defending multiple positions. His length also gives Rutgers a rebounding advantage that would not come from a traditional shooting guard.
Recruiting analyst Adam Finkelstein described Moore as a high-upside wing with particular value as a 3-point shooter, according to On the Banks.
The commitment also has symbolic importance.
Rutgers proved during the Harper and Bailey cycle that elite prospects would listen. Sustaining that recruiting level has been more difficult.
Moore gives the Scarlet Knights another nationally recognized player who can help recruit alongside the coaching staff. Prospects often evaluate not only the program but the teammates already committed to joining them.
Rutgers still has significant work remaining.
One four-star guard does not complete a roster, and the new five-year eligibility structure will make scholarship planning more complicated. The Scarlet Knights also must continue developing the players they sign instead of relying on recruiting rankings to create excitement.
Moore represents an excellent beginning.
Rutgers wanted a player capable of becoming the face of its 2027 class.
It found one before the rest of the group even existed.
