Sean Miller has spent a lot of his career in the Sweet 16.
That’s what makes this one stand out.
There was a time when getting to the second weekend felt like part of the job. At Xavier. At Arizona. His teams were good enough, consistent enough, that March runs weren’t surprising.
This time, it is.
Because Texas wasn’t supposed to be here.

A career that’s always found a way to win
Miller’s resume has never been the question.
More than 500 wins. Stops at Xavier and Arizona where winning became the expectation. Conference titles. Deep tournament runs. His teams have always been tough, organized, and hard to knock out.
That’s followed him to Texas, too.
But this season didn’t start with Sweet 16 expectations.
From the First Four to something real
Texas was sitting at 18-14 heading into the play-in game against NC State.
That’s not a team people are circling for a run.
That’s a team just trying to survive.
They did more than that.
They beat NC State to get in. Then they took down BYU. Then Gonzaga. And suddenly, what looked like a short stay turned into one of the better runs of the tournament so far.
You could feel it building game by game. More confidence. More belief. A group starting to play like it belonged.
Now, they’re still here.
Underdogs again, just how this run has gone
Next up is Purdue in San Jose on Thursday.
And once again, Texas won’t be the favorite.
But at this point, that almost fits.
They’ve been playing with that edge since the First Four. Nothing guaranteed. Nothing easy. Just finding ways to win and sticking around a little longer each time.
For Miller, this isn’t just another Sweet 16 on the resume.
It’s a reminder.
That he can still build something quickly. That his teams can still figure it out in March. And that even when the path isn’t clean, it can still lead somewhere real.
Texas wasn’t supposed to be here.
Now they are.
And they’re not done yet.
