This might have been the hardest week to rank the SEC teams this season. Auburn, Alabama, and Florida are the clear top three, but from that point on most of the teams are pretty close together. This kinda of conference depth is unheard of most years as many of the power conferences have only a couple of teams talented enough to win the conference title. While the SEC might have at least six capable of doing so this season. Following yet another impressive week of basketball from the SEC here are the latest conference power rankings.
16. South Carolina Gamecocks (10-10, 0-7)
South Carolina hasn’t given up on the season, but who would blame them if they did? The Gamecocks are the only SEC team without a win in conference play, but that isn’t because South Carolina hasn’t played well enough to knock off an SEC foe. Four of South Carolina’s seven conference losses have been by a combined 12 points, including a one-point loss to Florida earlier in the week. We saw Missouri go winless in SEC play last season, will South Carolina suffer the same fate this season?
15. Arkansas Razorbacks (12-8, 1-6)
Things went from bad to worse for Arkansas this week as the team announced that star freshman Boogie Fland would likely miss the rest of the season with a hand injury. This is a huge blow to a Razorback team that has the second-worst offense since SEC play started. On the bright side, Arkansas picked up its first conference win of the season over Georgia. It will be interesting to see how the Hogs play moving forward, but any NCAA Tournament hopes are likely dashed.
14. LSU Tigers (12-7, 1-5)
LSU hasn’t been terrible in SEC play, but the Tigers also haven’t been good. LSU has played on the road four times in six conference games, so maybe that explains some of the struggles for the Tigers. The lone conference win was against Arkansas, but that isn’t really a quality win at this point of the season. But not everything is going bad for LSU, since the start of SEC play the Tigers lead the conference in free throw percentage (83.8%) which counts for something.
13. Georgia Bulldogs (14-6, 2-5)
Since knocking upsetting Kentucky and Oklahoma, the Bulldogs have lost four straight games. There’s still for the Bulldogs to turn things around, but Georgia’s recent offensive play doesn’t inspire much hope of that happening. Over the four-game losing streak, Georgia is averaging 62 points per game, including a 59-point outing in a 30-point loss to Florida on Saturday. The Bulldogs’ defense can keep this team competitive moving forward, but without an offense, it's hard to see Georgia winning many more games.
