SWAC Tournament bracket is set: Bethune-Cookman leads wide-open race to March Madness

The 2026 SWAC men’s basketball tournament tips off March 9 in Atlanta, where Bethune-Cookman enters as the No. 1 seed and a crowded middle of the bracket sets up one of the most unpredictable conference tournaments in the country.

The road to March Madness always runs through conference tournaments. In the Southwestern Athletic Conference, it often comes with a little more chaos.

The 2026 SWAC men’s basketball tournament is set for March 9 through March 14 at Gateway Center Arena in Atlanta, bringing together all 12 teams in one of the most entertaining HBCU events of the postseason. A single elimination bracket means anything can happen across six days of basketball, and history shows the SWAC rarely follows the script.

Bethune-Cookman enters the tournament as the No. 1 seed after finishing the regular season 14-4 in conference play. But behind the Wildcats sits a tightly packed group of contenders capable of stealing the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

With ESPN+ carrying most of the games and the championship airing on ESPNU, the stage is set for one of the most competitive weeks in HBCU basketball.

Bethune-Cookman enters as the team to beat

Bethune-Cookman earned the top seed by consistently finding ways to win throughout the SWAC schedule. The Wildcats handled the pressure of conference play and finished two games clear at the top of the standings.

That reward comes with a strategic advantage.

The top two seeds avoid the early rounds and jump straight into the quarterfinals, meaning Bethune-Cookman will not take the court until March 11. The Wildcats will face the winner of the matchup between No. 8 Prairie View A&M and the winner of No. 10 Alabama State vs. No. 11 Alcorn State.

That extra rest can be massive in a tournament that asks some teams to play three or even four games in five days.

Bethune-Cookman will try to use that edge to secure the program’s first SWAC tournament title since joining the conference.

Florida A&M and Southern headline the chase pack

While Bethune-Cookman sits on top of the bracket, the next two seeds are more than capable of making a championship run.

Florida A&M claimed the No. 2 seed after finishing 11-7 in SWAC play. The Rattlers have shown flashes of being one of the most balanced teams in the league and will open their tournament run against the winner of No. 7 Jackson State and No. 9 Grambling State or No. 12 Mississippi Valley State.

Southern secured the No. 3 seed with the same 11-7 conference record. The Jaguars have built a reputation over the years as one of the most dangerous programs in the SWAC tournament environment. They will face No. 6 Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the quarterfinal round.

Both teams sit in position to meet Florida A&M in a semifinal showdown if the bracket holds.

Of course, the SWAC tournament rarely follows the expected path.

The middle of the bracket could produce serious chaos

The most intriguing part of this year’s tournament might be the cluster of teams sitting between the No. 4 and No. 8 seeds.

Texas Southern is the No. 4 seed and will open against No. 5 Alabama A&M in one of the best quarterfinal matchups on the schedule. Texas Southern has long been a postseason threat in the conference, while Alabama A&M finished with the same 10-8 league record.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Jackson State also finished with 10-8 conference marks, showing just how narrow the margin was across the middle of the standings.

Prairie View A&M rounds out the top eight at 9-9 in SWAC play. If the Panthers get through their opening matchup, they could quickly turn the bracket upside down against Bethune-Cookman.

This is exactly the type of balance that creates surprise runs in conference tournaments.

First round games kick off the week in Atlanta

The tournament begins with two opening round matchups on March 9.

Alabama State, the No. 10 seed, faces No. 11 Alcorn State in the first game of the tournament. Later that night, No. 9 Grambling State meets No. 12 Mississippi Valley State.

Those winners move on to face Prairie View A&M and Jackson State the following day.

By the time the top seeds enter the bracket on March 11, several teams will already be battle tested and playing with momentum.

That dynamic alone can make the early rounds especially dangerous for favorites.

One ticket to March Madness is on the line

Like many HBCU conferences, the SWAC typically sends just one team to the NCAA Tournament. That means the pressure inside Gateway Center Arena will be intense from the opening tip.

A single loss ends the season.

For Bethune-Cookman, the mission is simple. Win three games and secure the automatic bid.

For everyone else, the opportunity is just as clear. Survive the chaos of the bracket, capture the conference championship, and hear their name called on Selection Sunday.

That possibility is what makes conference tournament week one of the most exciting stretches of the college basketball season.
