We already knew Iowa State was dealing with an injury scare.

Now, we have an update.

Head coach T. J. Otzelberger shared that star forward Joshua Jefferson is still being evaluated after suffering an ankle sprain early in the NCAA Tournament.

What we know about Jefferson’s injury

Jefferson went down just minutes into Iowa State’s first-round game after landing awkwardly and did not return.

Initial X-rays came back negative, which was encouraging. But he was later seen in a walking boot and using crutches, making it clear the situation is still very much in question.

The timing raises the stakes

Iowa State is headed to Chicago for the Sweet 16, where it will face either Virginia Cavaliers men's basketball or Tennessee Volunteers men's basketball.

That’s where this becomes a much bigger issue.

Jefferson has been one of Iowa State’s most important players all season, averaging nearly 17 points while impacting every part of the game.

His availability could define how far this team can go.

Iowa State showed it can respond

Even without Jefferson, Iowa State dominated Kentucky Wildcats men's basketball 82-63 to reach the Sweet 16.

Tamin Lipsey stepped up, and the Cyclones forced 20 turnovers to take control.

They proved they can adjust.

Now it’s a waiting game

There isn’t much time.

Iowa State is moving on, but Jefferson’s status remains the biggest question surrounding this team.

And in March, that question can change everything.

Without Jefferson

Despite not having the 6'9 forward out of Las Vegas, the Cyclones are playing great basketball. Lipsey poured in 26 points and 10 assists, while Milan Momcilovic added 20 points in the blowout win over Kentucky in the second round.
