Many were surprised a few weeks ago when North Carolina decided to hire Mike Malone as their next head coach. We were going to learn a lot by how Malone and his new staff attack the transfer portal, especially as a former NBA head coach without recent collegiate experience. With the addition of Terrence Brown, clearly something might be cooking down in Chapel Hill.
Brown is a 6-3 guard originally out of Minneapolis who has become quite the scorer and productive player throughout his collegiate career. He began that career at Fairleigh Dickinson in 2023, arriving on campus months after FDU pulled that historic upset over Purdue during the Big Dance. Brown grew into a major role with the Knights, becoming one of the nation’s most productive players as a sophomore.

North Carolina lands Utah transfer Terrence Brown
That sophomore season saw him putting up more than 20 points per game to earn First Team All-NEC honors while leading that league in both points and steals. After outrageous production, Brown entered the transfer portal for the first time and found his new home at Utah. Moving from the NEC to the Big 12 is clearly a major step up, but Brown didn’t buckle to stiffer competition.
As a junior, Brown was one of the few bright spots on a Utah team that really struggled, averaging 19.9 points and 3.8 assists per game for the Utes. A productive point guard, Brown set the stage early with a 36-point performance against Weber State in the opening week of the season. While the Utes struggling to gain headway in a tough Big 12, Brown did have numerous great showings, including a 33-point effort in a loss to Kansas State.
The 3-point numbers don’t jump off the page, but Brown clearly can be electric both running an offense and getting to the basket. After things didn’t really work out for the Utes, it’s not a surprise to see him back in the transfer portal again. This time he won’t have to make a significant jump, but life will be a bit different in the ACC under Malone’s leadership.
Brown will hope to settle into a major role and can play significant minutes at both backcourt positions. He joins former Virginia Tech guard Neoklis Avdalas as new faces in this backcourt and is likely just the beginning as Malone rebuilds and reloads this roster. After averaging right around 20 points in each of his last two seasons, can we realistically expect the same level of productivity on what should be a more talented Tar Heels roster?
