Season Outlook

Unquestionably a busy last few months for the Longhorns, this program enters the season with certain expectations. Texas has done great work in recent years, even after that in-season coaching change, and has had the talent to be nationally relevant. In utilizing both high-profile recruits and the Transfer Portal, Terry and his staff have ensured that this new-look roster could bring more of the same success to Austin.

With six transfers joining the program, there’s certainly new depth in this rotation, and it’s easy to be excited about the possibilities with this lineup. The Longhorns added a pair of players who contributed on that historic Indiana State season, and those two mid-major stars will both likely come off the bench. Getting Kaluma, Mark, and Pope from power conference programs only adds to the potential star power in this lineup.

Shedrick is the major returning piece, as previously mentioned, but there’s clearly significant new talent around him in the frontcourt. If Kaluma and Kent can adjust to their new surroundings, then this can be an excellent defensive squad with great rebounding talent. The same could easily be said about the athletic guards added in the backcourt, with Johnson in particular expected to stand out as a true freshman.

However, it’s important to temper expectations, especially with the Longhorns adjusting to a new conference. This program can absolutely come out swinging and have a remarkable season, but they’re less familiar with their conference rivals and that adjustment will take time. Regardless, there’s significant talent here and a very winnable schedule in their debut season.

The bottom line is that this roster has a unique balance of veteran experience and raw talent and can absolutely make legitimate noise in the SEC. We’ll have to see how exactly Terry’s rotation comes together, but this roster goes several deep on the bench. If injuries and adjustment struggles are avoided, then the Longhorns might even contend for a conference crown in the SEC. What exactly is the ceiling for this new-look squad?
