Recent history has certainly been uneven at Texas Tech, though Grant McCasland seems to have this program back on track. After recent failures, McCasland was brought in from North Texas to run the program last offseason and certain proved himself capable as a Big 12 head coach.
The former Baylor assistant led the Red Raiders to 23 wins, a tie for 3rd place in a very tough Big 12, and a trip back to the NCAA Tournament. This success came just a year after a dreadful finish in league play, with the newly rejuvenated Red Raiders looking much more like a national contender, much like they did under Chris Beard in recent memory.
Before becoming one of NC State’s many victims last season, Texas Tech put together a great bounce back campaign, but this program isn’t just looking for that kind of story. After all, the Red Raiders were in the national title game just half a decade ago and showed promise already in hanging with the elite schools in the Big 12. With some new faces in town, does McCasland have the roster to legitimately contend for a league title?
With four new teams joining the league, the road ahead continues to be difficult not just for Texas Tech but for every team in this conference.
