Texas Tech Basketball: 2024-25 season preview for the Red Raiders

Season Outlook
You won’t find the Red Raiders in the preseason Top 25 polls, but that doesn’t mean you won’t see them there at some point this year. Despite last year’s great success, the Red Raiders did shed several players we didn’t mention earlier, finding replacements for Pop Isaacs and Joe Toussaint, their top two scorers from last season. The biggest question is if the Red Raiders did enough to keep up in this changing landscape in the Big 12.
Let’s start off in the backcourt, where replacing a young star like Isaacs was a tough pill to swallow after he transferred to Creighton. Fortunately, Hawkins is one of the best ball distributors in the country and becomes a fantastic weapon for this team. This staff also grabbed Overton and this team has a few other guards who could really take a step forward.
Speaking of forward, the frontcourt seems to be in good hands with a few new faces leading the charge. The Red Raiders already know what they’re getting from Williams, and hope that his game continues to evolve in his third collegiate season. More importantly, they’ll need to see that Toppin can handle life as a Big Ten big after doing sensational work as a true freshman in a tough MWC last year. They’ll also hope for a little more offense out of Federiko than he’s given Pitt in recent years.
One thing to watch in Lubbock is how Cambridge handles his return after that awful leg injury last season. He legitimately has the talent and potential to be the best frontcourt weapon on this team if he isn’t injured or setback this season. His emergence could play a major role in what kind of season the Red Raiders experience.
A lot can happen during Big 12 conference play, where every single night is a battle inside and out. Texas Tech has the talent to compete in this league yet again and McCasland has shown himself capable as a coach and recruiter. Another trip to the NCAA Tournament should be in the cards this season, but valiant performances out of players like Cambridge or Walton could elevate the Red Raiders towards a potentially more memorable campaign.
