These are the 5 teams that makes the most sense for Memphis transfer PJ Haggerty

Arguably, the best available player in the college basketball transfer portal is PJ Haggerty. He’s a 6’3 guard from Crosby, Texas, coming off an All-American campaign with the Memphis Tigers. He led the team with 21.7 ppg and 3.7 apg on 47% shooting from deep, earning AAC Player of the Year honors.

Haggerty recently entered the transfer portal after leading Memphis to the NCAA Tournament. He’ll have a ton of interest from any team needing a guard, but reportedly, the star sophomore guard is looking for some specific things: being the team's point guard and a $4 million NIL-related price tag.

The reality is that 99% of teams cannot provide both. However, some can. Here are five programs that could well fit Haggerty.

Florida

The reigning national champions lost all three of their starting guards. And the recent news of backup Denzel Aberdeen leaving for Kentucky leaves just Princeton incoming transfer, Xaivian Lee. He and Haggerty would be a good complementary duo in the SEC and the Gators could use a star to replace Alijah Martin Jr. in the backcourt.

Kansas State

As we saw with the roster this past season, Kansas State has the resources to get in the mix for top players such as Haggerty. And while the 2024-25 campaign was a disappointment, Coach Jerome Tang’s overall history with guard development still makes him an appealing man to play for if you’re a guard. All of the guards from this past season are gone so he can come in and be the unquestioned star of the team, while playing in the Big 12.

Ole Miss

As with Florida, the Rebels had lost all of their guards from this past season, including Sean Pedulla and Jaylen Murray. The team doesn’t have a point guard on its roster, so that Haggerty would be the clear lead guy. Plus, Coach Chris Beard has shown he can win at a high level. It’s also a program that should have the funds to afford the former Tiger.

Texas

The team’s two lead ball-handlers (Julian Larry and Tre Johnson) are gone, leaving returning junior guard Jordan Pope in the backcourt. He’s more of an off-guard, allowing someone like Haggerty to slide in at point. New HC Sean Miller needs to make a splash to get the team back in contention in the SEC, and Haggerty would be the perfect addition.

Texas Tech

If going back close to home in Texas matters, the Red Raiders would be a very appealing landing spot. They lost lead guards Elijah Hawkins and Chance McMillian, leaving just backup Christian Anderson Jr. as the only ball-handler on the roster. Assuming they’re in the market for a lead guard, Haggerty could join the preseason top-20 team and still have his preferred role.
