College Basketball debuted last night, featuring a ton of great games. It started at 8 am ET, when Winthrop held off Queens for the first official result. The night ended with freshman star AJ Dybantsa scoring 21 points to help BYU beat Villanova.

There were several interesting results throughout Monday. Here are the four most consequential results and what they could mean for the rest of the season.

Boise State falls to D-2 Hawaii Pacific

The most shocking result from Monday night came in the Mountain West, with Boise, one of the most consistent programs under Coach Leon Rice, falling to Hawaii Pacific, 79-78. According to bracketologists, this game won’t technically count against the Broncos on its resume, such as being a Quad 4 loss.

However, the committee members will remember that this result occurred in the regular season, and that can haunt them if they are in the at-large conversation. Of course, if Boise can’t be a D-2 team, what are the odds that they’ll be in the mix for a postseason bid to begin with?

Steven Pearl needs OT for his first win as head coach of Auburn

When Coach Bruce Pearl stepped down at the end of the offseason, his son, Steven, not only got the head coach job at Auburn but also signed a five-year deal. But the No. 20 Tigers had a rough start to the season, needing five extra minutes to beat Bethune-Cookman, 95-90. Keyshawn Hall had 28 points for Auburn to prevent the upset, but as far as first impressions go, the younger Pearl still has a lot to prove when it comes to being good enough to win in the SEC.

Arizona gets first Quad 1 win of season

The battle between Arizona and Florida was easily the highlight of the first day, and whichever team won that would’ve gotten the best win of the night. And that honor goes to Arizona, which won 93-87, led by 30 points from freshman forward Koa Peat. The Gators, the reigning national champs, will be just fine going forward. But it’s safe to say that the Wildcats got what will be one of the most impressive wins for a resume anyone will get before Selection Sunday.

TCU falls to projected bottom-tier Southland team

At one point, TCU was down by as much as 20 points to New Orleans, a team that went 4-27 last year. But despite a comeback, the Horned Frogs fell 78-74 in the second biggest upset of the day. There’s no debate with this one, as this is a Quad 4 loss for TCU, whose margin for error has already been cut. It’s a bad way to begin the year for Coach Jamie Dixon, who now needs to beat either Michigan or Florida in the next couple of weeks to make up for it.
