Basically all of April has been full of college basketball news about the transfer portal as programs both big and small have reloaded their rosters. It’s a wild time especially with NIL wreaking havoc on roster stability in the sport but these coaches are navigating as best they can. Dan Hurley certainly knows how to build a roster in this landscape and landed another notable piece in Nils Machowski.
A 6-3 wing from Berlin, Machowski came from Germany to the states originally to play collegiately for UCF back in 2023. He’d spend two seasons with the Knights largely as a backup player in the Big 12, averaging less than 3 points a game across hit time in Orlando. Machowski really caught on this past season after transferring to Wofford and shining in the SoCon.

UConn lands Wofford transfer Nils Machowski
This past year saw Machowski become an impactful piece for the Terriers under first-year coach Kevin Giltner. In what became an important season as Wofford finished 2nd in the league standings, Machowski became one of the top scorers for the Terriers, averaging 17.2 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. He was named Second Team All-SoCon and finished 3rd in the conference by making 38% of his 3-pointers as a versatile weapon for the Terriers.
Beyond being an effective shooter, Machowski is an intriguing rebounder for his size and really got his chance to shine with these minutes at Wofford. An early 28-point effort at Bellarmine early in the season got his season going in the right direction and was far from the only standout performance. Machowski had a 37-point game against The Citadel a week before dropping 33 against Mercer and has the ability to really produce.
Machowski stockpiled double-doubles late in the season and really came into his own and he’s betting on himself for his future. He entered the transfer portal and has found quite the landing spot, joining a UConn team that will certainly look a bit different next season. Hurley has a knack for getting the best out of his players and you can guarantee he’ll find a role for a wing who can hit outside shots, rebound, and be a reliable scorer.
The question is how Machowski’s game will translate, as success in the SoCon doesn’t exactly guarantee success in the Big East. He scored big on teams like The Citadel and UNC Greensboro but does that mean he can produce against the Marquette’s and St. John’s of the world? Regardless, he joins an impactful transfer class that includes three major conference additions in Oskar Giltay (Stanford), Najai Hines (Seton Hall), and Nik Khamenia (Duke), though Machowski is the one who had the most impressive numbers last season.
