UNC Tar Heels heading closer to the NIT after loss to Wake Forest

UNC is not a March Madness candidate

With recent losses to Stanford (at home) and Wake Forest (on the road), UNC is playing out of the NCAA postseason tournament. With only a handful of possible quality wins available, UNC is destined to land in the NIT for its post-season event.

UNC has continued to be plagued by inconsistent (sometimes nonexistent) front-court play. P J Washington is not an ACC starting center, and the rest of his frontcourt mates haven't provided any help. The play at the wing has been up and down, mainly relying on freshman Ian Jackson. Jackson has had some good games, but in others goes away for stretches.

UNC has gotten reliable play from the guard position. RJ Davis and Elliot Cadeau have provided quality minutes, with Davis carrying the bulk of the scoring load. Unfortunately, the guard play has been unable to overcome the lack of front-court play.

There has been some good bench play, but it has ben inconsistent, UNC can't seem to find the right rotation, especially in the frontcourt, Here again, the lack of a quality big man has made the substitution pattern a challenge.

Hubert Davis may have ben the right choice for UNC at the time of their coaching vacancy, but he and his staff have to take some of the blame for UNC's poor performance. They seem very stagnant on both the offensive and defensive ends. Nothing has been done to address their poorrebounding efforts on either glass.

I know UNC gets each team's best effort; however, UNC seems to be playing without any sense of urgency. They don't have time to wait for an ACC tournament to find themselves. Currently, they don't seem capable of winning three games in three nights against quality opponents.

Unless something changes drastically in the frontcourt, UNC will be settling for an NIT bid and not be a March Madness participant.
