VCU Looks Poised for a Strong Start with Manageable Non-Conference Slate

After a 103-74 win over Wagner, VCU’s upcoming slate offers opportunities to build rhythm and confidence before the start of Atlantic 10 play.

The VCU Rams opened the 2025-26 season in impressive fashion, cruising past Wagner 103-74 in a performance that started the tenure of new head coach Phil Martelli Jr. With a roster that mixes experienced returners and hungry newcomers, the Rams appear ready to move back in as a force in the Atlantic 10.

Now comes a non-conference schedule that should allow the team to build confidence and chemistry before league play begins.

Friday, November 7 vs. Utah State (Frisco)

VCU travels to the Texas Showcase for an early-season matchup against Utah State. The Aggies are a well-coached team with a balanced attack, making this a solid test of VCU’s pressure defense and transition game.

Wednesday, November 12 vs. Saint Peter’s

The Rams return home to the Siegel Center for their lone home game before a short road stretch. Saint Peter’s will look to slow things down, but VCU’s tempo and athleticism should control the night from start to finish.

Monday, November 17 at NC State

VCU visits former head coach Will Wade and the NC State Wolfpack in what could be one of the more entertaining storylines of the early season. The Wolfpack are physical and improving, but this matchup gives the Rams an opportunity to prove themselves against a power-conference foe.

Saturday, November 22 vs. Coppin State

A return home for the Rams and a chance to fine-tune rotations before heading to the Bahamas. Coppin State continues to rebuild, and VCU should be able to handle this one comfortably.

Wednesday, November 26 vs. USF (Bahamas)

Thanksgiving week brings a trip to the Bahamas and a familiar opponent. The Rams defeated South Florida in March of 2024 and will look to make it two in a row against the Bulls in this neutral-site matchup.

Thursday, November 27 vs. Vanderbilt or Western Kentucky (Bahamas)

The second game of the holiday trip comes against either Vanderbilt or Western Kentucky. Both opponents bring experience, but VCU’s depth and pace could be the difference in back-to-back play.

Friday, December 5 vs. Samford

Samford likes to push the ball, but few teams can match VCU’s tempo and defensive pressure. This one could turn into a high-scoring affair if both teams get hot early.

Wednesday, December 10 vs. New Mexico

A rematch of last year’s meeting in Albuquerque, which New Mexico won by seven. The Rams will have revenge on their minds as they look to defend home court and show how much they’ve grown since then.

Monday, December 15 vs. Niagara

The Purple Eagles typically play a slower, deliberate style that contrasts nicely with VCU’s tempo. Expect the Rams to use their depth to wear them down over 40 minutes.

Thursday, December 18 vs. American

VCU’s athleticism and full-court pressure should create plenty of problems for American. This is another game that provides valuable experience for the Rams’ bench.

Monday, December 22 vs. Rider

The Rams close out the non-conference schedule at home against Rider. It’s an opportunity to end the early stretch with momentum before turning their attention to Atlantic 10 play.

Building Toward Bigger Goals

The Rams’ early slate offers a good balance of games to develop rhythm and identity. If they continue to play with the energy and confidence shown in their opener, VCU should enter Atlantic 10 play with momentum and belief.
