The recent trend has been mass exodus and thousands of names in the transfer portal on a yearly basis and sometimes players are looking for near schools every offseason. That’s a common refrain for PJ Haggerty, with the talented guard finding his next home, continuing his collegiate career in the SEC.

A 6-3 guard from Crosby, Texas, Haggerty played briefly as a true freshman at TCU before taking a redshirt season. He became a major playmaker at Tulsa as a redshirt freshman before becoming a Second Team All-American the following year at Memphis. Haggerty averaged just over 21 points a game in both of those seasons in the AAC before yet another transfer.

Texas A&M lands Kansas State transfer PJ Haggerty

Another Big 12 destination awaited Haggerty and he’s fresh off a very productive junior season at Kansas State. A major piece in what would become Jerome Tang’s final season in Manhattan, Haggerty was among the nation’s top scorers, averaging 23.4 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game. Only three players averaged more points per game than Haggerty, who became one of the most productive pieces in the Big 12.

During what was a challenging year for Kansas State, Haggerty did provide some bright moments during a 12-20 campaign. He played really sharp in his initial days with the Wildcats, including a 37-point showing in a nice win over Mississippi State back in late November. Haggerty had twin 34-point performances in wins over Baylor and Utah late in the season during what was a really tough stretch for the Wildcats.

While he has transferred three times prior, it’s not a shock seeing Haggerty on the move again after a coaching change. A high-value transfer thanks to his scoring ability, Haggerty is actually heading back to his home state and should play a valuable role for Texas A&M next season. The Aggies are fresh off a trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Bucky McMillan’s debut season.

We don’t know for sure what the entire roster will look like in College Station next year but Haggerty isn’t heading there to be a second fiddle. He’s had three straight monster seasons as a scoring guard and will play that role well for the Aggies after his work in the Big 12. As apparent by this year, Texas A&M needs to put more talent around him than he had with Kansas State, but this acquisition is certainly a great start for McMillan and his staff as they hope to build a contender in a very strong SEC.
