With potentially hundreds of college basketball seniors getting an extra year of eligibility for the 2026-27 season, teams all over have been looking to see who they can add. There are some stars out there, and many others viewed as role players. For a program like the Houston Cougars, their starting lineup is likely set.Â
However, after losing all three key guards (Milos Uzan, Emmanuel Sharp, and Kingston Flemings) to the NBA Draft, along with former five-star prospect Isaih Harwell to the transfer portal, Houston needed a new crop of guards. LSU transfer Dedan Thomas Jr. (15.3 ppg and 6.5 apg) and former Purdue Fort Wayne guard Corey Hadnot II (20.4 ppg) are the projected starters, while top-30 freshman prospect Ikenna Alozie is set to have a big role.

Yet besides returning guards Mercy Miller and Chase McCarty, there was room for one proven high-major player who can play around 10-15 minutes off the bench. They found one this past week in Chendall Weaver, who spent the last three years at Texas. He started only 17 of 90 games but maintained a consistent role, averaging around 20 mpg off the bench each year.
Weaver averaged around 6.1 ppg and 4.0 rpg with the Longhorns, including limited perimeter shooting ability. However, he became a quality defender and rebounder for the team, while providing some offense as the 5th option on the floor. The veteran guard had five double-digit scoring games, including 17 points against NC State in the non-conference.
The biggest benefit Weaver gives the Cougars is his perimeter defense. While Thomas and Hadnot are quality individual scorers, defense has never been their calling card. If the team needs more on that end, they can play Weaver with one of them on the court. It also takes some pressure off Alozie as he enters his first season, so he doesn't have to play too much out of the gate if he’s not ready.
Houston’s addition of Weaver will not be the most impactful of the teams in the coming weeks from this new portal. However, this move could prove highly important for them to make a run in March, something this top-10 roster is expected to do.
