The ACC Will Have The Most Teams In The Tournament

Tran – Fiction. Last season, the Big 12 conference was the best conference in the nation in terms of SRS and strength of schedule and was rewarded with a national-best seven NCAA tournament bids.  Look for that trend to continue this year with the Big 12 once again the best conference in the country.  The ACC is top heavy with their talent and the only reasonable choices would be Duke, Virginia, Notre Dame, Louisville, and North Carolina.  The Big 12 has better talent overall, and it will not be a surprise to see Kansas, West Virginia, Iowa State, Baylor, Oklahoma, Texas, Oklahoma State, or even Kansas State make it into the Big Dance.

Sherman – Can I go with a tie? Probably not, so I will say fiction. Big 12 will get seven and the ACC will get six. North Carolina State is hard on the bubble now and trending downward. Big East could get six or seven too!

Piasecki – Fact. I see about 6 teams as current locks for the tournament thus far, with Miami and NC State being potential bubble teams because of big wins over Duke. The Big 12 will be a close second because of the depth of the conference, but ultimately, I believe the ACC will get more bubble teams in due to to bevy of top 10 teams.

Lopez – Fact. But I could very much see the Big 12 sneaking in a team over the ACC come March. Right now, however, the ACC looks to have the more impressive middle of the pack teams, such as Pitt and Miami, that already have their statement wins on the season. If those middling teams can finish out conference play strong, the committee will notice their decent enough record while taking into consideration those aforementioned statement wins. Also, something something east coast bias.

Bennett – Fact. This one is the toughest to predict right now. The ACC currently has five guaranteed spots to Virginia, Notre Dame, North Carolina, Duke and Louisville with bubble teams of NC State, Miami, Clemson and Pittsburgh. Even with two out of four of those spots going to those teams that leaves them with seven and there is not another conference that can surpass those numbers. I think there are scenarios out there involving the Big 12 and Big East to get seven teams in, but the ACC has an easier path and more opportunities to make statement wins.

Parker – Fiction. Particularly after its strongest bubble team (Syracuse) declared itself ineligible. The conference has five no-brainers, but I’m having trouble seeing more than that if teams like North Carolina State don’t turn things around quickly. While Big 12 bubble team Kansas State suffered a huge setback yesterday as well, I see six Big 12 teams making the dance regardless of whether the Wildcats fall apart.

Miller – Fact. Even with yesterday’s news about Syracuse, this is a conference that should send seven teams to the dance. Duke, Virginia, Notre Dame, Louisville, and North Carolina are seemingly locks while Miami and NC State have a solid chance to make the field. The Big 12 should tie the ACC with 7 bids. Kansas, Iowa State, West Virginia, Oklahoma, and Baylor are locks with Oklahoma State and Texas hopeful for an at-large bid.
