Rumors of Brad Stevens to Texas Threaten to Destroy Indiana

facebooktwitterreddit

An innocuous tweet from Seth Davis concerning the vacant Texas head coaching position sent minor shockwaves throughout basketball, as he named Boston Celtics’ Brad Stevens as a potential target. For Indiana fans, the very possibility would cause the state to implode.

Hasn’t the state of Indiana been through enough already?

As the head coaching job for the Longhorns remains to be filled, with nothing concrete surrounding top candidates Shaka Smart and Gregg Marshall, just about anyone seems like, at the very least, fodder for discussion, which is exactly what Sports Illustrated and CBS Sports analyst Seth Davis did Monday afternoon.

“Hearing some Brad Stevens chatter.” The very notion of it instantly throws Indiana Hoosiers‘ fans into a tailspin of rage if not a simple sense of hopelessness.

With another lackluster season in the books under seven-season head coach Tom Crean, Stevens has long been the Obi-Wan Kenobi-style “only hope” for many who’ve grown weary with the sense of stagnancy the program has shown as of late.

Without question, if Brad Stevens left Beantown for Austin, the scene in Bloomington would most likely look like this:

While it’s good nightmare fuel on April Fool’s Day, there is nothing concrete that would suggest that Stevens would make such a move, especially since the money Texas is offering is nowhere near what he’s getting with the Celtics, as he’s in the second year of a six-year deal, not to mention that he’s in the middle of a remarkable turnaround where he’s taking a team built to fail into a possible playoff spot.

When it’s all said and done, this is just a rumor, and a rather ephemeral one at that. If Stevens can’t be pried out of his seat to go back to Indiana, it’s extremely unlikely that he would be wooed into heading to unfamiliar territory for less money. But that’s how the Internet works, isn’t it? Take the strand of a part of a sort of a rumor, run with it and watch it snowball.

Kind of like what you see right here.

Of course, during what could be best described as the state of Indiana’s worst week ever, even the possibility of a favorite son going elsewhere could be enough to sink the hearts of Hoosiers for good, and the only April Fool would be Indiana fans everywhere.
