- NCAA Basketball: 4 head coaches who needs to win big in 2023-24 season
USA Basketball has finalized their roster for the Pan-American Games, a little more than a week before the tournament tips off in Toronto. Seven current student-athletes will join five professionals to form the final roster after head coach Mark Few let go of four players from a group of 16 who were vying for a chance to compete. The following members will make up the squad that will be expected to win gold after a disappointing bronze medal finish in 2011.
PG – Melo Trimble (Maryland)
PG – Bobby Brown (Dongguan Leopards, China)
SG – Ron Baker (Wichita State)
SG – Malcolm Brogdon (Virginia)
SG – Keith Langford (UNICS Kazan, Russia)
SF – Denzel Valentine (Michigan State)
SF – Taurean Prince (Baylor)
SF – Damien Wilkins (Indios de Mayagüez, Puerto Rico)
PF – Shawn Long (Louisiana-Lafayette)
PF – Anthony Randolph (Lokomotiv-Kuban, Russia)
C – Kaleb Tarczewski (Arizona)
C – Ryan Hollins (Sacramento Kings, NBA)
Most notable among those who did not make the final cut are Wichita State point guard Fred VanVleet and Butler’s Kellen Dunham. VanVleet was regarded by many as the best point guard in college basketball last season and is expected to have a similar impact this year as well. Being left off the final roster will surely fuel him through his senior season, where he will be tasked with proving his worth to teams looking for a point guard in the 2016 NBA Draft.

Dunham was one of the top players in the Big East last year, leading what many believed to be a depleted Butler team to a comfortable spot in the NCAA Tournament (where they would advance to the Round of 32). His absence was particularly puzzling, as it leaves the team without a knockdown shooter at the small forward position.
The other two players let go from the team were Oklahoma’s Isaiah Cousins and Nigel Hayes from Wisconsin. Cousins’ advancement to this stage of the process is a sign of notable improvement for the guard who will team with Big 12 Player of the Year Candidate Buddy Hield this season. Hayes being left off the team may be cause for concern in Madison, where Hayes will be looked at as somewhat of a go-to guy while the Badgers face what could be called a rebuilding season in the wake of losing Frank Kaminsky, Sam Dekker, and Traevon Jackson. An extended summer with USA Basketball could have aided Hayes’ development immensely as he prepares for his expanded role.
