There usually isn’t much going on in terms of hard college basketball news during random summer Thursday afternoons. So I can’t believe that I came back from my lunch break only to find more quality silliness to share regarding the Wisconsin Badgers. The team, which is inexplicably led by Bo Ryan, one of the nation’s least personable coaches, is quickly becoming the kings of comedic relief on the college hoops scene.
Earlier today, we posted a horrendously hilarious freestyle rap from Wisconsin’s Nigel Hayes. The track, which was his take on Drake’s new “Back to Back” diss track (directed at fellow rapper Meek Mill), included a bit of friendly ribbing towards his teammates.
One of those teammates, fellow returning forward Vitto Brown, has already responded to Hayes with a diss track dedicated to lyrically (I use this term loosely) dissecting Hayes.
It shouldn’t be a surprise that Vitto was the man to step up to Hayes. Brown’s musical inclination is already well known among college basketball fans. He was one of four NCAA student-athletes who sang the national anthem during last season’s Final Four. Predictably, his skills translated a bit better when decided to become a one-off “Rapper Turnt Singer” (that’s a T-Pain reference out of nowhere for the win).
Not only does Vitto feature a much better flow than his teammate, he also was fairly clever with the track’s “cover art” on SoundCloud. The picture depicted is of Nigel Hayes delivering a hard foul to former Minnesota Golden Gopher Austin Hollins. Hollins would go on to complete the monster jam and create a moment that clearly still resonates in the Badger locker room. You can see the dunk from approximately 147 angles in the video below.
This was a nod towards some effective sports-related imagery used by Drake during his feud. Drake, who is from Toronto, used a picture of the Toronto Blue Jays’ Joe Carter as the cover art for his “Back to Back” track. The photo depicts Carter after he hit a home run against the Philadelphia Phillies to win the World Series in 1993. Meek Mill, Drake’s adversary in this hip-hop kerfuffle, hails from Philly.
It’s the subtle shots that hurt the most, apparently.
To conclude, this whole ordeal isn’t really newsworthy. It does nothing more than serve as the latest example of the fact that no one is having more fun playing college basketball than the Wisconsin Badgers. Maybe that’s why they’re so good? Thank heavens for the Badgers on a slow news day.
