Georgia Tech Basketball: Yellow Jackets go Undefeated in the Bahamas

While Georgia Tech football fans are getting ready for their Yellow Jackets to take the field and defend their 2014 Coastal Division championship, Georgia Tech Basketball fans are finishing up licking their wounds from a tough 2014-15 basketball campaign.

The Ramblin’ Wreck had a tough year finishing 12-19 on the year, losing 13 games by seven points or less, usually having the lead in those games only to collapse toward the end.

Brian Gregory and his squad needed to wash off the stench of a tough 2014-15 basketball season and the ensuing fan pressure calling for Coach Gregory’s ouster.

With the 2015-16 Georgia Tech Basketball season on the horizon for the Yellow Jackets, the slate is wiped clean.

Brian Gregory would be considered to be in a lame duck coaching position by some, or in a position to prove that he has his program going in the right direction by others.

Georgia Tech’s summer hoop trip to the Bahamas was a very good start to getting things off on a positive note for the 2015-16 season.

The summer business trip is seen as a reward for the Yellow Jackets getting through their 10 allotted summer practices, and also as a way for Brian Gregory to get his first look at what his team is capable of against opposition.

Georgia Tech Basketball went undefeated in the Bahamas trip. They opened up the trip defeating the Atlantis All-Stars 101-60 with Charles Mitchell’s 28 points and 10 rebounds leading the way.

Tech then followed that up by going over the century mark in their second game and winning 115-70 over the Providence Storm, with Tech shooting 60% from the floor in that game.

Then finally, the Jackets closed out the trip with a 77-69 victory over the CTG Knights with Nick Jacobs dropping 31 points on the stat sheet

This is not the redemption that the Yellow Jackets are looking for, but it is a positive start to what they are trying to build in The Flats.

Tech played without leading scorer Marcus Georges-Hunt and new incoming transfer from Virginia Tech Adam Smith on this trip, but Coach Gregory still got a good look at what he is going to be working with this fall.

6-foot-8 forward, Nick Jacobs is going to be depended on this upcoming season by the Yellow Jackets. He is now eligible to play for Georgia Tech after sitting out a year because of transferring from Alabama.

Jacobs is going to be a solid inside scorer in the paint to go along with Charles Mitchell this fall and Brian Gregory spoke about his contribution after the game 77-69 victory over CGI.

Finding the three-point stroke is still an issue for the Yellow Jackets, but there is still time to work that out between now and November.

Last year Tech knocked down a meager 26.7% from three-point range for the season and 29.6% of their treys during ACC Conference play.

  • The addition of Adam Smith is going to go a long way toward improving the Yellow Jackets’ three-point shooting. Smith shot 42% from deep and averaged 13.4 points per contest last year for the Hokies.

Georgia Tech is going to hang their hat on inside play, rebounding and defense.

Marcus Georges-Hunt is going to be coming into 2015-16 after hurting his right foot in the very last game of the 2014-15 season against the North Carolina Tar Heels.

Georges-Hunt led the Jackets in scoring averaging 13.6 points to go along with 5.5 rebounds.

Now Tech will get ready for their 2015-16 NCAA schedule which will start on November 13th against Cornell.

The Jackets are also going to be participating in the 2015 NIT Season Tip-off at the Barclays Center on November 26th.
