Michigan Wolverines Basketball: Beilein Eyeing Cassius Winston
After addressing the need for bigmen and wing players, the Wolverines are now focused on finding their future Point Guard. In-State star Cassius Winston definitely fits the bill. Winston recently included the Wolverines in his Top 5, along with Michigan State, Pittsburgh, Stanford, and Harvard. Winston has also scheduled his five official visits.

The U-D Jesuit star has garnered serious interest from several of the nation’s top programs. Winston holds offers from the likes of Michigan, Michigan State, and Ohio State. The Michigan-Michigan State rivalry has continued in Winston’s recruitment and it doesn’t look like it will cease. The two in-state schools have long been considered the front runners for the four-star prospect, in fact, Winston only has positive things to say about both.
Winston recently told Scout.com his opinions on Michigan.
“I like that it’s a guard oriented game. They give the guards the ball… it’s a very good program. I like the coaches and everything.”
Michigan will have the last of Winston’s five official visits, which has been scheduled for Sept. 19. Winston will reportedly attend the football game between Michigan and UNLV.
This comes as positive news for Wolverine fans as many like the fact that Michigan will be able to present their pitch to Winston last. Getting Winston on campus is a huge win for the Wolverines and if everything goes well, their position will only strengthen.

Winston is a highly touted recruit for many reasons. Winston is not only a Top 5 player at a position, but he is also a close friend of AAU teammate and five-star Small Forward from Flint, Michigan, Miles Bridges.
This is a huge factor for the Wolverines as they were also included in Bridges’ Top 5 and recently extended him an offer. Bridges has mentioned that there is a possibility that both he and Winston will play at the same school and as mentioned, both have the Wolverines high on their list.
Exactly what does Winston bring to the table? Well, Winston brings a constant scoring threat that the Wolverines desperately need.
A guard that has the ability to score as well as make his teammates look better is exactly the type of player that can thrive in Coach John Beilein’s system. Winston has fantastic handles, and is able to keep his opponents off-balanced with little to no effort.
Throw that in with a reliable jumper from beyond the arc and you have a player who has the potential to be an elite point guard at the next level.
Winston displays great court vision with the ability to feed the ball to the post and to sharpshooters waiting on the wing. Sound familiar?

If you’re a fan of the Wolverine basketball program then indeed it does. Michigan’s offensive scheme surrounds itself around a guard who can score and feed their shooters. The most recent example of this is current Utah Jazz point guard and former Michigan point guard, Trey Burke.
Many Michigan fans have voiced their displeasure with Beilein in regards to recruiting. It seems that John Beilein always puts his Wolverines in serious contention, but has difficulty in finishing the job as seen in the recent decommitment of Tyus Battle and the miss on 2015 small forward Jaylen Brown, who committed to California.
Winning this recruiting battle will be a crucial factor in future of basketball in the state of Michigan, as it looks to be either Michigan or Michigan State as the likely destination for Winston, who is rated as the No. 27 prospect nationally according to 247Sports.
If the Wolverines can land Winston, Michigan will have likely found their offensive leader of the future. If they miss out on him, their point guard situation may start to become murky and remain unsolved. Winston’s recruitment is definitely one to keep an eye on for Michigan fans as the Wolverines have a legitimate shot at landing him.
