Nike and their EYBL grassroots basketball program continues to operate ahead of the pack in terms of innovative ideas that are engaging and developing the next generation of talented basketball players.

“This trip is about taking things to the next level – elevating training regimens and creating a competitive atmosphere among the top players in our program,” said Carlton DeBose, Director of Nike’s Elite Youth Basketball, in a statement released by Nike. “This will be a great opportunity for players to showcase their individual work ethic, competitiveness and character as we ask them to train alongside the stars of the future.”

The latest addition to the EYBL schedule is the EYBL Select Team Training Camp that will take place in the Bahamas next week. The camp will consist of a star studded lineup of EYBL performers that will train together (training or practice is almost a foreign concept for travel basketball programs these days) before eventually challenging a Bahamian national select team to conclude the experience.

The training will be led by former Arizona guard and Final Four Most Outstanding Player, Miles Simon.

The game will be open to both the public and to NBA scouts, who will be particularly interested in the six Class of 2016 players that will be eligible for next year’s NBA Draft.

The list of players slated to participate is a dynamic “who’s who” list of the best talents in high school basketball that includes prominent members from both the Class of 2016 and 2017.

Class of 2016 prospects include:

F – Miles Bridges
G – De’Aaron Fox
F – Harry Giles
F – Jonathan Isaac (committed to Florida State)
G – Malik Monk
F – Jayson Tatum (committed to Duke)

Class of 2017 prospects include:

G – Mohamed Bamba
F – Gary Trent
F – Jarred Vanderbilt
G – Trae Young
F – Michael Porter Jr.
C – Wendell Carter

The two top players in the Class of 2016 will be in attendance, as Duke commit Jayson Tatum and his possible future Duke teammate Harry Giles will both be in camp. Michael Porter Jr., the second best player in the Class of 2017 will also be in attendace, where he should face some of his stiffest competition from Tatum, a fellow native of St. Louis.

As per the Nike press release, the camp will also include training in various off the court areas.

"Just as importantly, players will be provided essential tools to develop critical off-court skills to their future success. These sessions will focus on sports psychology, nutrition, life skills, media training and increasing players’ social media savvy and personal brand development."

Kudos to Nike for taking an active role in this aspect of developing their players. The involvement of shoe companies has cast a negative shadow over amateur basketball. However, this is an example of a company getting it right in terms of providing a unique experience for a great group of players, but also taking an active role in developing as people and future professionals.
