Recruiting: Four-Star Prospect Sedee Keita Announces Top Six

facebooktwitterreddit

Sedee Keita — a 4-star prospect and Top 100 recruit from Saxton River, Vermont — trimmed his recruiting list to six on Monday night. Keita is choosing between LSU, Penn State, Providence, South Carolina, Temple and UNLV. He announced his decision via Twitter.

Each of the options presents an interesting storyline. If Keita follows through on 247 Sports’ current prediction and commits to Temple, he’d be spurning several power conference teams — including major programs in Georgetown and Syracuse — to play in the American Athletic Conference.

At Penn State, Keita would join four star prospects Tony Carr and Lamar Stevens in a recruiting class that’s completely out of the ordinary for a program with four NCAA Tournament appearances since the sixties. Carr, Stevens and 3-star Penn State commit Nazeer Bostick played AAU for Team Final in Philadelphia. Keita would be the first member of the uncharacteristically talented class to come from a different AAU team. A third Top 100 recruit would also likely boost the school’s final recruiting ranking into the Top 25.

Much like Penn State, South Carolina’s recent success wouldn’t normally warrant consideration from a Top 100 recruit. Unlike Penn State, South Carolina has a proven coach and already has high end prospects on campus. Head coach Frank Martin’s 117-54 record at Kansas State is a far cry from the 42-28 record that Chambers accumulated at Boston University of the America East Conference. On the court, junior Sindarius Thornwell and freshman P.J. Dozier came to South Carolina as Top 50 recruits.

LSU burst onto the recruiting scene last year following top recruit Ben Simmons’ commitment. With Simmons in the fold, the Tigers convinced guards Antonio Blankney (ESPN’s 15th ranked recruit) and Brandon Sampson (39th on ESPN) to commit. While Keita doesn’t project to be the same caliber recruit, he’s an impressive specimen with the upside to be a great player.

Providence began its recent run of making the NCAA Tournament under Ed Cooley with the help of unheralded prospects like LaDontae Henton and Bryce Cotton, but has recently seen an uptick in recruiting. The Friars are searching for a first commitment in the class of 2016, and Keita would be a solid first piece to help continue the school’s newly found regular supply of Top 100 recruits.

UNLV’s inclusion on Keita’s list comes as a bit of a surprise. Unlike most of the programs on the list, UNLV hasn’t struggled to bring in Top 100 recruits. Head coach Dave Rice has regularly seen his highly touted recruits leave seasons of eligibility on the table But none of that makes UNLV’s spot on the list a surprise. Unlike every other member of Keita’s final six, UNLV’s campus is over 2,500 miles away from the talented forward’s hometown.
