9. Mark Gottfried (North Carolina State)

Career record: 386-224 (63.3%)
Record at North Carolina State: 108-69 (61.0%)
NCAA Tournament appearances: 11
Final Fours: 0
National Championships: 0

Saying that North Carolina State head coach Mark Gottfried hasn’t lived up to expectations might be an understatement.

For a coach that has brought in a top-20 recruiting class in four of the past five seasons, Gottfried has had very little success. Despite reeling in a number of four and five-star recruits, including Rodney Purvis, T.J. Warren and ‘Cat’ Barber, NC State has continued to underachieve.

Under Gottfried, the Wolfpack have never lost fewer than 11 games in a season, finished better than fourth place in the ACC, or gotten past the Sweet 16. Gottfried has a record of 108-69 since arriving in Raleigh in 2011 and he is just 44-44 in five years of ACC play.

He’s also had a difficult time keeping players from leaving the program. Purvis and Tyler Harris both transferred after just one season at NC State. Tyler Lewis, Kyle Washington, Caleb Martin and Cody Martin all left after two seasons.

As shocking as it is, Gottfried continues to bring in top-shelf talent year after year. This season, he welcomes in two five-star players in elite point guard Dennis Smith Jr. and 7-foot big man Omer Yurtseven.

How long can a program bring in blue chip recruits but achieve completely average results before people start pointing fingers at the head coach? I don’t know. But if Gottfried can’t win with the class of commits he has coming in this year, we may find out.
