Georgia Southern basketball: Eagles swoop in for Simeon Carter
By Doug Winkey
Georgia Southern basketball grabbed a piece for the future with former Iowa State forward Simeon Carter. What can the Eagles expect from their new weapon?
There hasn’t been much news surrounding Georgia Southern basketball this spring. The Eagles lost two players to transfer, but only one (Devonte Boykins) was any sort of impact guy. They have replaced that loss with Iowa State transfer Simeon Carter, per a tweet from Verbal Commits. Carter will have to sit out next season in accordance with NCAA rules but will hit the hardwood again in 2018-2019.
What the Eagles get with Carter is potential. The former three-star recruit averaged just .8 points and .5 rebounds in just 21 games played. The West Charlotte native was slow to develop with Iowa State. He saw fewer minutes as a sophomore than as a freshman despite ISU having few consistent guys inside. One thing I did notice with Carter is tons of enthusiasm on the bench and an ability to run the floor. Maybe a new system and Sun Belt competition are just what the young man needs to excel.
Based on Georgia Southern’s current scholarship chart, the Eagles do have several players down low, so Carter will need to improve if he wants to edge out some of the team’s other options. If Carter can indeed win a rotation spot for ’18-19, he could have some tremendous guards to support in Ike Smith, Tookie Brown and Jacksonville State transfer Jared Hamilton. Georgia Southern could be a force as early as next year and improve even further when Carter regains eligibility.

This commitment has strong potential for Head Coach Mark Byington. He gets a guy with high-major experience and a season to mold him in the Georgia Southern system. Keep an eye on this pairing when we get to 2018-2019.
