Four-star recruit Darius McNeil released from Iowa State, California bound?
By Taylor Sturm
The Iowa State Cyclones received some bad news, as Head Coach Steve Prohm announced that 2017 recruit Darius McNeil had been released from his Letter of Intent.
After signing a Letter of Intent to play for the Iowa State Cyclones, four-star point guard Darius McNeil has been released, meaning that he is still open to choosing another program.
Throughout his recruitment, he was pursued heavily by several other teams, perhaps none more so than the California Golden Bears.
His former AAU coach was hired by the Golden Bears recently, so it is only natural that many will believe that the talented player is headed to play for new Cal Head Coach Wyking Jones.
California is in the midst of a transition period, so McNeil could see playing time almost immediately in a top-heavy Pac-12.
If this is true, it is good that McNeil was able to secure his release so that he could play where he wanted to play before being forced to sit out a season by transferring.
Iowa State, on the other hand, will be fine without him. Sure, the Cyclones lose some huge pieces heading into 2017-18, but their recruiting is always solid and they bring in several other more highly rated recruits.

This is a win-win move for both Iowa State and McNeil heading into the 2017-18 season.
