Chris Petersen – Washington

We would all like our coaches to be good on the X’s and O’s. We also would like our coaches to be great talent evaluators and find players that others missed. Third, we would like our coaches to maximize the talent that they do have. Petersen checks all these boxes.

Much of Petersen’s reputation was built at Boise State where he took the Broncos to heights that they may never reach again. That included two Fiesta Bowls. He did it by calling an inventive offense and finding gems in the third tier of California recruits to come play on the Blue Turf. Moving on to the Washington Huskies has not seemed to slow him down as the Huskies have made a college football playoff appearance.

Petersen has some attraction as a program builder, but much of his appeal comes from his in-game decisions. There is no one that you would rather have pull out the clipboard in a late-game situation and draw up something to win. Alternatively, there is no guy you would rather have in practice going over some weird scenario just in case it did come up during the game.

The book will still be out on Petersen until he shows he can have long-term success in the Pac-12 but he fits just fine as a theoretical basketball coach.
