For Xavier basketball, senior Trevon Bluiett became the fifth player in program history to hit the 2,000 point milestone on Wednesday night.

Recognizing somebody’s greatness is a challenge while they’re still around to soak up the accolades. Such is the case with Xavier Musketeers senior guard Trevon Bluiett. After reaching the holy grail of college basketball milestones on Wednesday night, however, it’s worth celebrating the star.

The fateful bucket came with just over seven minutes to play against Marquette. Like he’s done hundreds of times throughout his career, Bluiett pulled up for a jumper and nailed it, reaching the 2,000 point threshold.

This has not been Bluiett’s finest season. A shoulder issue has derailed his senior season. His play has been inconsistent, perhaps a result of the shoulder problem. He’s averaging 18.9 points per game, which is plenty, but just 0.4 more than last year.

But he’s a team player and his team is thriving once again. Xavier is 19-3, good enough to be ranked No. 8 in the latest AP poll. He leads the team in points and rebounds and is third in assists, so it’s clear the Musketeers go as he does.

Besides, he’s just the fifth player in the history of the program to accomplish this feat. The next time he steps on the court, Bluiett will likely pass Tyrone Hill and Romain Sato on the school’s all-time scoring list. That’ll leave just David West and Byron Larkin in front of him.

Three of those players have jerseys hanging in the Xavier rafters. Bluiett should surely add his name to that list too. Of course, the 2,000 points are nice, but Bluiett probably wants to add one more accolade to the list. Last year, the Musketeers made it as far as the Elite Eight for the third time. They’ve never made it further.

To lead Xavier to the Final Four for the first time would be the crowning achievement of his impressive career. There’s enough time before then to celebrate what he’s accomplished so far, though.
