NCAA basketball: 10 teams fighting for a No. 1 seed
Xavier Musketeers
Surprisingly one of college basketball’s most consistent teams, Xavier is right in the mix for an NCAA tournament top seed. Sure, their loss to Villanova at home last Saturday hurt their chances, but they still entered the week ranked fourth thanks to struggles from much of the top ten.
Now, with very manageable games remaining against Providence and DePaul, the Musketeers could build some momentum heading into the Big East tournament. Then, if they were able to knock off Villanova and win the conference title, they could snatch the Wildcats’ top seed away.
Michigan State Spartans
The second ranked Spartans have survived some scares, leaving them in good position to claim a #1 seed. Sure, they didn’t look like a quality Big Ten team in portions of their most recent games against Northwestern, Indiana, and Iowa.
But at the same time, they’ve racked up enough quality wins to keep the conference’s top ranking. Beating Purdue two weeks ago was huge, and if they are able to take care of business against Wisconsin and then make a run in the conference tournament, their play late in the season will make up for missteps along the way in the eyes of the committee.
