NBA Draft 2018 Big Board 1.0: Ranking the top 60 prospects
By John Ryan
Tier 1: Franchise Players
2. DeAndre Ayton (C, Arizona): Still very well in the mix to go No. 1 overall, Ayton headlines a talented group of big men in this year’s class. Ayton’s overwhelming physical traits are one thing, but when it’s matched with a polished offensive skill-set like his, he has the potential to be a superstar at the next level.
Ayton is a polished scorer, both with his back to the basket and playing face-up. He will even offer floor-stretching capabilities as he continues to refine his 3-point shot (34% from three this season). He’s a monster on the glass, on both ends of the floor, and has all the tools to eventually become a plus defender.
Ayton struggled on the defensive end in college but was rarely seen in 1-on-1 post situations. The problem with his defense largely stemmed from technique, whether it was poorly attacking the perimeter or misunderstanding his weak-side help assignment. He moves well, is athletic, long, and should become a very good defender with proper coaching at the next level.
1. Luka Doncic (G, Slovenia)
Currently playing at the highest level in Europe, Doncic has consistently produced against elite competition. The Real Madrid star is uncharacteristically polished for someone his age and should play a big role for an NBA team starting next year. Doncic is listed as an off-guard, largely due to his height (6’8”) and defensive assignment, but should spend a lot of time running the offense (I.E. James Harden).

He’s a gifted passer but is even more dangerous as a scorer. Doncic has extended his range to beyond the arc and is now an efficient scorer from all three levels. He excels in the pick-and-roll and plays the game with a high IQ. He’s the perfect fit for today’s modern pace-and-space playstyle.
