Miami Basketball: Kameron McGusty is the guard of the future for the Hurricanes
The Miami Hurricanes picked up a commitment from guard Kameron McGusty as a transfer from the Oklahoma Sooners.
Kameron McGusty is going to need some warmer clothes for the rest of his time in college.
The guard chose to commit to the Miami Hurricanes on Monday afternoon. Following two years with the Oklahoma Sooners, he will now spend up to two years with Miami. He will not be eligible to play until the 2019-20 season.
McGusty took a step back last season, when the presence and usage of Trae Young reigned supreme at Oklahoma. McGusty only averaged eight points per game, less than the 10.9 per game he averaged as a freshman. He also only started eight games last season.
Still, he could find himself as an essential part of Miami’s future.
The Oklahoma transfer was considering other upper echelon programs, including Virginia Tech and Houston, according to the Miami Herald. He was in demand for the potential he brings to a team.
There aren’t too many proven point guards on Miami’s roster, although that could change over the course of the year. At the moment, rising junior shooting guard Dejan Vasiljevic and rising sophomore point guard Chris Lykes represent continuity for the Hurricanes.
Reinforcements are on the way, though. Former Mount St. Mary’s transfer Miles Wilson gains eligibility this year; he averaged 11.8 points per game during his lone season with the NEC school. Miami also landed Wyoming transfer Anthony Mack, who never played during his freshman season because of concussion problems.
The program is expected to apply for a waiver that would make him eligible immediately.
In the wake of several departures to the NBA Draft, Jim Larranaga is looking for his next crop of impact contributors that can keep a good thing going. Several may be on the roster now.

But it’ll take a year to realize the potential Kameron McGusty brings to Miami.
