Purdue Basketball: Top 10 Players To Play For Matt Painter
2. E’Twaun Moore – Purdue Boilermakers (2008-2011)
Career stats: 15.3 ppg 4.4 rpg 2.9 apg
From the get-go, Moore established himself as the top guard for Purdue, averaging in double figures his freshman season. He showed that he could score at a high rate, and had a huge senior season to show for it.
Moore averaged 18.0 ppg his final year, shooting 40% from three-point range. His 38 points against Ohio State was the best individual scoring performance for Purdue in nearly 20 years at the time.
As I’m sure you’ve noticed, the vast majority of this list has been involving the frontcourt. Moore is the exception, as he’s been by far the best perimeter player to play for Painter. If Edwards stays a couple more years, he could potentially make an argument for himself.
1. Robbie Hummel – Purdue Boilermakers (2008-2011)
Career stats: 14.0 ppg 6.8 rpg 2.1 apg
He played most of his career alongside both Moore and Johnson, but Hummel carved out his own niche to become an incredibly productive player. As a freshman, he broke school records in both three-point and shooting percentage in route to getting a surprising First-Team All-Big Ten selection.
Injuries started to take a toll on hm his sophomore season, and a torn ACL his junior year caused to miss all of March and the NCAA Tournament. He ended up re-injuring it the following season, causing him to redshirt.
Yet Hummels found a way to overcome those setbacks, averaging 16.4 ppg and 7.2 rpg, on his way to another All-Big Ten campaign. He went out as a fighter in his final game against Kansas in the Big Dance, with 26 points and nine rebounds.

Hummels was not only the sentimental favorite for fans of Purdue and beyond but was a consistent presence for the team. The injuries have caused Boilermaker fans to think “what ifs” with him, but he still gave the program some great years still. If he was fully healthy, there wouldn’t even be a question as to who was the best Purdue player under Painter.
