Head coach Shaka Smart once again has an elite recruiting class coming in for Texas basketball. Will this group lead the program to the NCAA Tournament?

The reign of head coach Shaka Smart at the helm of Texas basketball has had mixed results through three complete seasons. Even though the program has reached the NCAA Tournament in two of those seasons, they are yet to advance past the first round. Nonetheless, the program looks to be heading in the right direction, especially in terms of recruiting. Overall, it does not seem like it will take long before Texas reaches the second weekend of the Big Dance.

Looking ahead to this upcoming season, Texas basketball once again is expected to reach the Big Dance. Even though the program had to wave goodbye to superstar center Mo Bamba, the majority of the roster is returning and Coach Smart is bringing in an elite recruiting class. If the Longhorns are able to overcome inexperience this season, then it may become apparent that they have a higher ceiling than most teams in college basketball.

The potential talent level of this team is simply off the charts despite a relative lack of collegiate experience. It might be difficult to get the entire roster to gel early on but this team should have more overall balance than they did a year ago. Now, let’s break down the five players joining the program out of the 2018 recruiting class.
