Mississippi State Basketball: 3 reasons why the Bulldogs will win the SEC
3. Talent trumps all
Ultimately, the best teams win more often than not because they have the best players. Mississippi State will display one of the strongest cores in the SEC.
Despite his need to improve his shooting, Quinndary Weatherspoon enters the season with SEC Player of the Year potential written all over him. He was an all-around threat last year, averaging 14.4 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game.
Right behind him is his brother, Nick Weatherspoon. A spectacular freshman season saw the guard average 10.8 points per game. Combined, the two brothers have the potential to average 30 points per game on their own in 2018-19.
Lamar Peters also returns. The guard arguably took a step back during his sophomore season, averaging fewer points and rebounds per game while seeing his shooting numbers depreciate. He became a better ball distributor, though, dishing 4.5 assists per game. He also averaged 9.6 points per game.
Combining the skills he demonstrated during his freshman and sophomore campaigns will lead to a breakthrough on the court.
No team is returning more key contributors from the previous season than Mississippi State. That melding of continuity and talent should lead to the season fans have been waiting for in Starkville for over a decade.
