2019 NCAA Tournament: TCU, Indiana, Alabama among top Selection Sunday snubs
No. 5. Texas Longhorns
No one actually thought Texas belonged in the NCAA Tournament after finishing .500, right? Well if you looked at who the Longhorns had defeated and ignored how many total losses they had, an argument could have been made. It seems like Texas does this to us every year. They pick up some nice non-conference wins and then lose a few questionable ones. Texas then goes on to beat a couple of the top-tier teams in the Big 12, but loses to the last place team.
The Longhorns went out to Las Vegas and beat North Carolina. A Tar Heels team that clinched a one seed in the NCAA Tournament on Sunday. After losing to Michigan State in the title game, they fell to Radford and VCU. Providence was not a good loss either, but two games before that, Texas had beaten Purdue who wound up with a three seed.
Texas beat Kansas State on the road. The Wildcats ended up sharing the regular season crown with Texas Tech. They beat the eventual Tournament Champs in Iowa State and Texas managed to knock off Kansas. The only Big 12 team they did sweep was West Virginia, but that’s better than what most teams can say including the Jayhawks. The only two teams that swept them was TCU and Texas Tech. And the Horned Frogs missed the NCAA Tournament as well.
With two non-conference wins to teams that landed three seeds or better along with five great conference wins, Texas was still staring at possibly finishing .500 overall. They got matched up with Kansas in the Big 12 Tournament and lost. Texas finished right around the NET top-40 and had the same ratings in just about every other website. Despite playing a grueling conference and picking up some nice non-conference wins, Texas was snubbed from the NCAA Tournament because of their overall record.
