4. Ryan Odom, UMBC Retrievers

Ryan Odom has seen a bit of short-term success as the head coach of the UMBC Retrievers. He’s coached the team to three 20-win seasons in the America East Conference as well as an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2018.

Odom has a record of 67-37 at UMBC through three seasons. He’s won no less than 21 games in his tenure, going 21-13 in 2018-19 and finishing third in the AEC. He’s a great coaching mind and is the son of former head coach Dave Odom (Wake Forest/South Carolina).

As a former assistant coach at Virginia Tech, Odom has experience coaching and recruiting already in the ACC. A return now wouldn’t be a surprise but his chances at a job don’t quite past the eye-test yet. A lot of things would need to fall his way in order for Odom to get a shot at the Hokies head coaching job.

One thing he does have under his belt is the first round upset of the Virginia Cavaliers in the 2018 NCAA Tournament. In one of the biggest upsets in history, his team stood tall, speaking to the type of coach Odom is.
