Oklahoma State Basketball: Chris Harris Jr. adds to strong 2019 recruiting class
Coach Mike Boynton is building something special with the addition of Chris Harris Jr. for the 2019 recruiting class of Oklahoma State Basketball.
Last season, Oklahoma State Basketball were among the bottom feeders of the Big 12. Coach Mike Boynton is bringing in a star-studded recruiting class to boost the program back into the conference’s upper echelon.
His latest coup came on Friday morning when he secured a commitment from shooting guard Chris Harris Jr., a native of Garland, Texas. Harris Jr. was bound for Texas A&M and the SEC but opened his recruitment back up after the dismissal of former Aggies coach Billy Kennedy.
Oklahoma State beat out two Texas schools – Texas and Texas A&M – to poach Harris Jr.
247 Sports evaluates Harris Jr. as a three-star recruit, just outside of being one of the 125 best recruits in the Class of 2019. He’s also just short of being one of the top 20 shooting guards entering the collegiate ranks next season.
His addition makes Boynton’s class even more prestigious, both in the conference and the country.
Oklahoma State’s class is led by another shooting guard, Marcus Watson, a four-star recruit in the class. The Cowboys’ other commitments are four-star guard Avery Anderson III, three-star center Kalib Boone, and three-star power forward (and twin) Keylan Boone.
247 Sports ranks their class as the 19th in the nation and fourth in the conference, an improvement from 2018 of 40 and four ranks, respectively.
Last season, the Cowboys took a major step back from their NIT trip in Boynton’s first year, finishing 12-20. That matched the program’s worst record since Travis Ford’s final season in Stillwater.
Meanwhile, the Big 12 distinguished itself as the most competitive conference in the sport. There were no easy games from top to bottom, as the West Virginia Mountaineers proved with their mini-Big 12 Tournament run, which followed a season of just four conference wins.
By all appearances, it was destined to be a long road for Oklahoma State to emerge from the pack once more. But the team’s strongest class since 2007 (according to 247 Sports) immediately alters that perception.
James Anderson was the linchpin of the Class of 2007 and eventually developed into a Big 12 Player of the Year.
Who knows? Maybe Chris Harris Jr. will do the same as the Oklahoma State Cowboys climb the contention ladder once more.
