SEC Basketball Recruiting: Every team’s top class from past decade
By Dakota Cox
Mississippi State Bulldogs: 2015
Mississippi State hasn’t had a ton of great recruiting classes. When their players come in, they aren’t highly-ranked. They mostly are quality players who develop into stars. That’s why I’m choosing 2015 as their top recruiting class.
In this class, they have two players that grew into stars for the Bulldogs. Aric Holman was a bruiser down low for the team. However, their best player was Quinndary Weatherspoon. Weatherspoon was outside of the top 100 players of the 2015 class, but he grew into a more well-rounded player during his four years at Mississippi State.
Another key piece to this recruiting class was Malik Newman, but he transferred after just one season with Mississippi State. This is hard to control in terms of ranking a recruiting class, because his decision to leave doesn’t show that he was a bad player. Most people leave because of things that don’t affect the recruiting process that much.
Another recruiting class I considered was the following class in 2016. They had some higher prospects that didn’t completely pan out, but they also had Lamar Peters and Abdul Ado. However, Schnider Herard busted, And Mario Kegler transferred after just one season. They had a lot of people in the draft class, but I believe 2015 had more value.
