St. John’s Basketball is in a new era with Mike Anderson at the helm. His first commitment went as good as you can as for with four-star guard Posh Alexander.

Commitments are trickling in regarding the class of 2020 recruiting group. The latest is Posh Alexander, a four-star combo guard ranked right around the top-100 overall. The Bronx, New York native decided to remain home, opting to play for St. John’s Basketball. He’s the first commitment for new head coach Mike Anderson and the first for the 2020 class.

Had it not been for an arm injury a year ago, Alexander’s ranking likely would be higher. He’s an explosive guard who despite his 5’11 and 170-lb size, makes up for it with his physicality and aggressiveness to drive to the basket. When healthy, he was impressive in both the AAU circuit as well as his stint with USA Basketball as a quality playmaker who can lead an offense right out the gate.

He’ll need to be or the Red Storm starting next season. Grad transfer point guard Nick Rutherford is only around for one year while top scorer Mustapha Heron will be departing as well. LJ Figueroa‘s future is in doubt as well, as a big junior campaign from him could have the former JUCO standout go pro early. There are not many guarantees on the projected 2020-21 roster, with the team going to rely heavily on mid-major transfers David Caraher and Rasheem Dunn, along with former NC State big man Ian Steere.

Alexander has a great shot at starting for St. John’s early on and become the face of the new wave of guards for the program. They enjoyed statistical success with Shamorie Ponds and Marcus LoVett, although it didn’t translate to the team benefitting. It’s important for Coach Anderson to surround Alexander with great surrounding talent particularly in the frontcourt. But it’s a great start to land a four-star local product out the gate and the new coaching staff establishes themselves in the New York area, now that programs such as Seton Hall and Providence have been making recent inroads.

Predicting landing spots for top 2020 prospects. dark. Next

St. John’s Basketball beat out Seton Hall for Alexander’s services, along with Dayton, Pittsburgh and Illinois. This pickup guarantees the team having a good playmaker to lead the offense, while also setting up what could be a great 2020 recruiting class for the program. This might not make national news but the Red Storm landed a badly needed commitment from a potential All-Big East kind of talent.
