A look at the top players

The Hokies were led this season by freshman Landers Nolley II. Nolley put up 15.5 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game while shooting 31.6 percent from 3-point range. He opened the season with 30 points against the Clemson Tigers and proceeded to post three more 20+ point efforts, including 22 points against No. 3-ranked Michigan State in an upset victory back on Nov. 25.

He showed early why he was such a sought-after recruit with his ability to score the basketball, especially from behind the arc. He made a career-high seven 3-pointers in a 79-53 victory over Lehigh back on Nov. 16.

Following Nolley’s lead, freshman Jalen Cone finished the season second in made 3-pointers (64) to go along with his 44.4 percent shooting percentage, good for sixth in the ACC. He also ranked ninth in the conference in 3-pointers made (2.2).

Hunter Cattoor and Nahiem Alleyne were two other freshmen that excelled from 3-point land. Cattoor made 51 shots from deep while Alleyne made 49. They’re players to keep an eye on under Young’s new system of 3-point shooting.

The ultimate snub of the year was to freshman guard Tyrece Radford. He’s produced 10.2 points, 6.2 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.0 steals per contest and 11.8 points and 6.6 rebounds per game in ACC action.

Radford really showed what he could do down the stretch of the regular season and put up a career-high 26 points against the Miami Hurricanes on Feb. 19. Even with those numbers, he didn’t earn All-ACC honors while Nolley earned All-Freshmen Team and All-Honorable Mention for his performance.
