Texas Basketball: Why Greg Brown makes Longhorns a 2020-21 title threat
1. Power Forward was a position of need
Texas is returning all twelve players from last seasons team, however, none of those players are particularly above-average options at the four.
Last season, Texas used a number of different players at power forward. Royce Hamm was one of those players, as the junior pitched in just three points and three rebounds per game.
Gerald Liddell was the starter for all of non-conference play before an injury early into the Big 12 season sidelined him for the remainder of the season. Like Hamm, Liddell contributed less than five points and rebounds per game.
The likely starter before the addition of Brown was rising sophomore Kai Jones. Jones’ stats were not all that impressive, but he was a big-time playmaker on defense, taking over the starting spot once Liddell went down.
With Brown, Texas will run out one of the most balanced starting groups in the nation. The guards, all of which coming off of double-digit scoring seasons, will provide all of the perimeter attack. Brown, as well as center Jericho Sims, will pair to form a formidable group down low.
Smart filled the one glaring hole on the roster in a big way by nabbing Brown. The Longhorns are not only balanced, but they are also deep, as all 13 men can contribute.
